Braised Five Spices Tofu with Mushroom

Tofu or bean curd is rich in high quality protein, a great substitute to meat in daily intake. This healthy vegetarian food contains a high percentage of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, calcium and iron, yet low percentage of sodium and fats. You can stir fry, braise, steam or serve with salad. Below is my recipe for braised tofu. For better result, you may marinate and put in fridge overnight before cooking.

Ingredients:
1 firm tofu
3 fresh white mushroom (or shittake)
3 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp five spices powder
2 garlic clove, minced
2 tsp canola oil

Directions:
(1) Pat dry tofu and cut into bite-size
(2) Heat oil in high heat
(3) Quick brown tofu for 2 minutes
(4) Mix soy sauce, brown sugar, five spices and garlic
(5) Add in the mushroom
(6) Pour in the mixture, turn heat to slow medium
(7) Simmer 8 minutes
(8) Little salt and pepper to taste (optional)
(9) Sprinkle with little sesame oil
(10) Remove and serve warm immediately
