Parents, have you ever ask?

How children become readers and writers?
How to support literacy in your home?
Ways to talk and read with your young children.

Well, I attended a family workshop "Early Language and Literacy in the Home" on December 8th, 2010 at Creekside Elementary, addressed some interesting topics by three presenters:

1. Susan Moore, Director of Clinical Education and Services, Speech Language Hearing Sciences (Early childhood language and literacy), University of Colorado, Boulder
2. Barbara Roscoe, Coordinator of Child Learning Center Outreach Program, University of Colorado, Boulder
3. Clara Pérez-Méndez, President at Puentes Culturales, Denver

Parents, we are important in helping our children in building early language and reading skills. Make these suggested great possibilities in your house to build the awareness and skills in language, listening, reading, writing, speaking, rhyming, etc.
Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Calendar
  • calender of family activities
  • magnetic letters or words on the refrigerator
  • photo display for refrigerator,
  • following directions (for games, chores, errands)
  • listening (tapes, directions, conversations at mealtime)
  • notes to children

A preschooler should be able to tell story back to you.
I was waiting for this moment and now I see it with my own eyes, wonderful! She can recognize both lower and upper case alphabets by 2.5 years old. Some gifted children can name alphabets by two! About 3 months before turning three, she made it writing her own name. That surprises us. Anyway, it's never too late, start with something now.
